1951) watercolor and pencil on paper, signed , measures 8.5\" x 10.5\"dorrit black was one of a handful of intrepid australian women who ventured overseas in the 1930s to complete and broaden their artistic training in the united kingdom and continental europe. black, along with her peers anne dangar, ethel spowers and eveline syme studied at the pioneering schools of albert gleizes and andrã© lhote in paris and at the grosvenor school, where they studied experimental lino-cutting under claude flight. although black, spowers and syme all reached international acclaim with their achievements in this democratic and radical medium, they nevertheless returned to australia and mostly continued their artistic practice in the traditional forms of oil on canvas and works on paper. dorrit black, an adelaidean, returned to the southern state and achieved broader success than her peers as an exhibiting society painter, a teacher of landscape painting (with jeffrey smart being a notable, and impressionable pupil) and a strong advocate for artistic pursuits and social affairs, until her untimely passing after a road accident in 1951. in 1939, dorrit black, aged 48, had purchased her own home in the suburban fringes of adelaide after decades of living with, and providing primary care for, her ailing mother. her new house was carefully arranged to suit her artistic pursuits, and a large south-facing window gave the artist direct views on to the hills of the mount lofty ranges, where she had spent significant time as a child.her paintings from this time reflected blackâ\u20ac™s newfound self-sufficiency and confidence, becoming more realist and personal.1farmhouse, mount torrens is one such work, humble in size and documentary in subject matter, it reflects a war-time austerity and blackâ\u20ac™s socialist fervour in the home-effort. based in the foothill township of mount torrens, whose prosperity and construction had dwindled some twenty years earlier, black has painted an anonymous portrait of a countrywoman and her humble relationship with the vibrantly green land.discreetly benign, this rural scene of a woman absorbed in her handcraft sitting on the porch a house has the quiet discipline and dignity of blackâ\u20ac™s earlier works of wartime labouring scenes and activities of local patriotic organisations (for example the cloth cutters, c.1940 â\u20ac\u201c 42, private collection).still using the dynamic diagonal compositional techniques, flattened picture plane, simple geometric foundations and colour theory of lhote and flight, farmhouse, mount torrens conceals its complexity with a childlike styliszation. this work, most probably included in dorrit blackâ\u20ac™s one-woman survey show at the royal south australian art societyâ\u20ac™s exhibition hall in 1945, demonstrates blackâ\u20ac™s final determination to express the realities of nature and ordinary people without sentimentality and undue lyricism. \n condition: good condition"},"estimateMax":1200,"lotNumber":"102","title":{"en":"dorrit black (1891 - 1948) watercolor and pencil on paper, signed , measures 12.5\" x 19\" , w/frame 21\" x 26.5\"a precisionist and surrealist painter, especially noted for nocturnes, george ault had the ability to depict lonely, everyday beauty of the world in a moment of absolute stillness. he also experimented with more traditional styles of realism, but was relatively untouched by modernist abstraction. his paintings were based on what he saw around him, many of them architectural subjects, and rendered in a quietly controlled manner. he was born in cleveland, ohio, and in 1899 moved to london with his family and attended the slade school and st. john's wood art school. he traveled extensively on the continent, which exposed him to avant-garde art movements. in 1911, he returned to the united states, and by 1937 was settled in woodstock, new york where he freely explored his passion for the play of light at a favorite spot called russell's corners. he did numerous scenes that are almost entirely black, illuminated by a light high on an electrical pole. although his childhood had been a happy one, from his mid 20s, he experienced mounting tragedy. his family lost their fortune; his mother died in a mental hospital; all three of his brothers committed suicide; he had a losing battle with alcoholism; and he lost his eyesight. he and his wife lived a reclusive, impoverished existence in woodstock, without electricity or plumbing and his studio was exceedingly spartan. his own death in 1948 appeared to be suicide. in his work he explored a variety of modern styles, but about 1920 settled on architectural, urban themes rendered carefully and geometrically, with a great sense of design and careful paint application. the paintings had a romantic, poetic quality, and, perhaps reflecting his own personal sadnesses, often depicted isolated objects in spare settings as well as many nocturnes. by 1946, he turned to primarily abstract subjects, a world of random shapes and imaginary landscapes. he was a great admirer of giorgio de chirico, italian surrealist, and ault's later work showed more and more of this influence. \n condition: good condition"},"estimateMax":3500,"lotNumber":"105","title":{"en":"george copeland ault (1891 -
