(1884-1919) and the business was loctaed at 136-140 e. main in louisville, kentucky from 1887-1909. paul jones began making whiskey in georgia back in 1865. in 1866 he moved to louisvill. in 1889 jones purchase the j g mattingly & bro. distillery for $125,000. at public auction. it ran as j g mattingly co., with jones as president, until the plant was sold to the trust in 1902. in 1922, paul jones & co. bought out frankfort distillery inc. the frankfort distillery was one of the few companies granted a permit to sell liquor for medicinal purposes during prohibition. by 1928 stocks of pre-prohibition whiskey had dwindled and the company contracted the louisville based ph. stizel distillery to supply them with spirits. when prohibition was repealed in 1933, frankfort distilleries inc. took over the old stitzel plant and built a new one (four roses) in shively. by the late 1940's, the distilleries and the brands had been taken over by seagrams."},"estimateMax":1500,"lotNumber":"29","title":{"en":"19th century paul jones & co \"comrades for 81 years\" self-framed tin lithograph"},"url":"https://us.bidspirit.com/ui/lotPage/merkelsauction/source/catalog/auction/54797/lot/18606/view","tags":["uscollectibles_breweriana","uscollectibles","uscollectibles_all"],"directSalePrice":250,"lastUpdate":"2026-08-10T22:59:21.035Z","textCase":"lower","estimate":"$500 - $1,500","currency":"USD","id":18606,"estimateMin":500},{"startPrice":250,"sold":false,"images":["https://bidspirit-images.global.ssl.fastly.net/merkelsauction/cloned-images/18607/001/001.jpg"],"available":false,"description":{"en":"made by meek company in coshocton, ohio. large framed o.f.c stagg distillery whiskey sign tin lithograph by meek company. original frame measures 39.50\"x52.\" subject measures 23.50\"x35.50\".don asked me to research this piece many years ago. here is what i provided to him.....frankfort, kentucky self framed tin-lithograph sign in original wooden frame. the colors on this sign are spectacular as is the original condition. the frame shows some smoke/soot marks which could be cleaned if desired. this pre-prohibition sign was manufactured by the meek co. coshocton, ohio prior to 1904 as all known signs with this image bear marking of george t. stagg on fold wooden border starting in 1904. this remarkable sign was found in the timothy mckune building at the northeast corner of middle and main streets in chelsea, michigan. this building was formerly a saloon under the proprietorship of frank rarringer and/or jacob zang. the august 1899 saanborn fire insurance map verifies this saloons existence, at this location, where the sign was found.company history:perhaps the most remarkable man to enter the whiskey industry post civil war was colonel edmund hayes taylor, jr. born in columbia, kentucky in 1832. he was the grand nephew of general zachary taylor. col. taylor was a man of education and cultivation and also had the taylor grit and determination. he established the o.f.c.
