close disciple of r. aryeh leib shapiro rabbi of smorgon and kovno. in his youth, he was already considered a foremost torah scholar of the generation, with his profound understanding and original novellae plumbing the depth of talmudic topics. he served as rabbi in various cities: ilya, ivyanets, omtchislav (mstsislaw) and others. in 1879, he was appointed rabbi of the ashkenazi community in dvinsk (then named dinaburg, denenburg). ranked amongst the leading torah scholars of the generation, he was regularly summoned to meetings of foremost torah scholars with r. yitzchak elchanan, and his opinion on current matters was weighed with serious consideration by all lithuanian rabbis. in 1879, he was appointed by lithuanian torah leaders as one of the three rabbis who would advise on matters of religion and halacha, at the rabbi's convention in st petersburg (together with r. lipa of mir and r. eliyahu eliezer of vilna). thanks to his lobbying, the government recognized the orthodox rabbinate's absolute authority over divorce and marriage in the jewish community. his book rosh lareuveni was printed many years following his passing, and contains only a small part of his בלב שקט, ואכן הבדיקות העלו שהילד בריא לחלוטין בחסדי ה'!  \n  \n סגולה לעשירות  \n מעשה היה באחד שנכנס אל רבינו זצוק\"ל והתלונן על קשיי הפרנסה וחובותיו הרבים. אמר לו רבינו: \"אתה יודע את כל הש\"ס? תלמד את כל הש\"ס ותתעשר! כך כתוב במדרש (תנחומא פ' כי תשא כ\"ט) 'כל העוסק בתורה, פרנסתו מן התורה ומתעשר ומצליח', תלמד את כל הש\"ס ותבוא לכאן להיבחן, אם תדע, תתעשר!\"  \n  \n המשיך היהודי ושאל, הרי אצל ר\"ע מצאנו (כתובות ס\"ג ע\"א ובתוס' שם) שתכף מכשהלך ללמוד כבר נקרא רבי, א\"כ יתכן שהעשירות תגיע מיד כשאתחיל ללמוד?\u2026 \"תתחיל ללמוד וכבר תראה בעצמך\"\u2026 השיב לו רבינו זצוק\"ל. \n  \n מרן הגאון רבי חיים קניבסקי נולד בשנת תרפ\"ח בעיר פינסק לאביו הגה\"ק ר' יעקב ישראל ה'סטייפלר' בעל ה'קהילות יעקב'. בשנת תרצ\"ד עלה עם משפחתו לארץ ישראל, והתיישבו בבני ברק. למד ב\"תלמוד תורה רבי עקיבא - מרכז\" וכן עם אביו עמו למד את רוב מסכתות הש\"ס. בגיל 10 נכנס ללמוד בישיבת תפארת ציון בבני ברק. לאחר 6 שנות לימוד בתפארת ציון, ביקש אביו שיבוא ללמוד אצלו בישיבת בית יוסף, שם למד אצלו זמן אחד את מסכת יבמות. לאחר מכן עבר ללמוד בישיבת לומז'ה בפתח תקווה. בשנתו הראשונה בישיבת לומז'ה, בגיל 17, סיים לראשונה את כל התלמוד בבלי. מדי שבוע היה חוזר לביתו לקראת שבת אז למד תורה מדודו החזון איש. בשנת תשי\"ב נשא לאישה את בת שבע אסתר, בתו של פוסק הדור הגאון רבי יוסף שלום אלישיב. למד בכולל חזון איש בבני ברק במשך עשרות שנים כאברך מן המניין. ולאחר פטירת אביו ששימש כנשיא הכולל, מילא את מקומו בתפקיד זה. בקיאותו בכל מכמני התורה, גם בספרים נדירים ולא מצויים, הקנו לו את התואר \"שר התורה\". ברכותיו היו ידועות בכוחם הגדול, ומכל רחבי תבל נהרו אליו. נחשב כמנהיג הדור, ומקובל על כל שכבות הציבור החרדי.  \n  \n  \n חמיו הגרי\"ש אלישיב
