sandzen (1891-1954) "granite banks" 1923, original lithograph, pencil signed and titled. inscribed "with best wishes to dolores gaston, june 2, 1927", fair condition, tears, creases and tape in margins-one tear into image, overall toning, image size: 14.75 x 19.75 inches, birger sandzen had a long distinguished career as an art professor at bethany college in lindsborg, kansas and as an impressionist landscape painter. he is best known for his modernist style with masses of paint, akin to that of vincent van gogh and paul cezanne, and for rocky mountain landscape subjects. his early work is tonalist in style in the manner of scandanavian romanticism, but after he began taking trips to colorado, his work became much more expressionist and brightly colored.sven birger sandzen was born in blidsberg, sweden to clara elizabeth and johan peter sandzen. his mother had studied drawing and his father, a minister, enjoyed writing poetry and playing the violin. when birger's parents noticed his artistic inclination, they asked a young minister to give drawing lessons to the nine year old. at the age of ten, he attended the college and academy of skara. here his drawing and painting lessons continued under olof erlandsson, a graduate of the royal academy at stockholm. after graduation from skara college, sandzen spent a semester at lund university attending art history lectures and continuing the study of french. following lund university he went to the technical high school at stockholm, where he studied perspective and form drawing. sandzen joined a group of young artists and they rented a studio at anders zorn's suggestion. they received instruction from anders as well as richard bergh, a well-known portrait painter and per hasselberg, one of sweden's best sculptors. a doctor from the caroline medical institute of stockholm gave anatomy lessons. these young artists formed "the art school of the artists' league" which played an important part in the development of modern swedish art.in the summer of 1894 sandzen returned to sweden where he read the book entitled i sverige by a young swedish-american educator, dr. carl a. swensson. dr. swensson, a college president, told of his struggles on the plains of kansas and he challenged other young swedes to come help him. sandzen was excited by the proposition and wrote dr. swensson a letter asking if he could use a young artist who could sing tenor and teach french. as soon as sandzen received the cable offering him a job, he accepted and arrived in lindsborg, kansas the day college opened in the fall.birger soon realized lindborg was where he wanted to make his home with the inspiring atmosphere of the new college and energy of the young teachers and president. he built a home, where he continued to live for fifty-four years. in 1900 he married augusta alfrida leksell, a gifted pianist. they had one daughter, margaret elizabeth.with time sandzen became more and more involved in teaching, even his evenings were reserved for class time. at around nine or ten in the evening he would find time for his own drawing. sandzen's inspiration came from his summers spent in colorado, utah, and new mexico.sandzen spent his time trying to generate an interest in art by talking to people about art, organizing exhibitions and establishing art clubs. he donated artwork to the local art club to help raise money for the purchasing of art books for the library, the financing of exhibitions, and the occasional awarding of a scholarship.the babcock galleries in new york hosted two large exhibitions of sandzen's work in 1922 and 1923. his sponsors, the american-scandinavian foundation, enthusiastically invited him to come. sandzen's reply was that he had classes and could not leave.sandzen retired after fifty-two years of teaching at bethany college. sandzen had honorary doctorates bestowed upon him by midland college of fremont, nebraska by nebraska university, and by kansas state college. in 1940 he was made a knight if the swedish order of the north star.after many months of failing health, birger sandzen passed away quietly in his home on june 19, 1954.
gragert, handblown glass, pink vase, unsigned, good condition, 7.5x5x5. born in 1953 at an airbase in virginia where her father, a career officer, was stationed at the time, helen koons gragert spent her childhood through college years in a unique cultural setting of lindsborg, kansas. the influence of the artistic environment of that small central kansas community of swedish descendants, coupled with a gift for creative expression, led helen to begin working in the medium of watercolor while in high school and to take a profound interest in other art forms.her first exposure to glass blowing came as a youngster while on a trip with her mother and aunt to mexico. there helen met a native artisan who allowed her to assist in the creation of a piece of blown glass. as brief as the creative moment might have been , the grace and beauty of glass-blown art captured her imagination and etched a lasting impression in her mind. she knew that someday she would again experience the power and excitement of blowing glass.during her high school years, helen studied watercolor under the tutelage of sally johnson and received her introduction to pottery. she remained in lindsborg to attend bethany college, receiving a bachelor's degree in the natural sciences in 1975. then newly married, she moved to stillwater, oklahoma, to study at oklahoma state university, eventually earning a master's degree in food and nutrition. but, while her higher education degrees were in the sciences, helen's passion remained in the arts. she continued to paint, finding much subject matter in the rural settings of north central oklahoma that reminded her greatly of her kansas roots.in stillwater, helen also discovered an excellent, community-supported arts program known as multigraphis. studying pottery under local artist ron jones, helen moved from red clay to porcelain, eventually developing a style that today blends delicate oriental-like forms with striking modern glazes. taking advantage at multigraphis, one of the few municipal-owned and operated glass-blowing facilities in the united states, helen began taking classes in the medium in 1985 studying under gary borden, randy walker, and cindy rasche.finding creative enrichment in an art form that she had long admired, helen advanced rapidly during the next few years, showing her glass work, as well as her porcelain and watercolor paintings, at art festivals and displays in stillwater, oklahoma, oklahoma city, norman, and weatherford, oklahoma, and wichita and lindsborg, kansas.in 1987 she was invited to display her glass at the wichita art museum sales gallery, where it continues to be shown. her work is also on display at the oklahoma city museum of art, oklahoma city, oklahoma; arts place, oklahoma city museum of art, oklahoma city, oklahoma; es posible gallery, carefree, arizona; and multigraphis seasonal gallery, stillwater, oklahoma.helen also exhibited her glass, by invitation at a special show for graduates and friends of the department of art at bethany college in 1990. her studio, artistic impressions, is located in stillwater, oklahoma.
condition: good condition, no chips or cracks
soltner (1921-2011) stoneware, cup, artist's stamp on foot, good condition, no chips or cracks. soldner was born in summerfield, illinois on april 24, 1921. growing up, he had never planned to be an artist; in fact, as a college student, he was pre-med. his medical aspirations waned after being drafted into the army and serving as a medic for three-and-a-half years during world war ii. he returned to the united states with a strong interest in photography, and the desire to pursue a more artistic career. he turned to painting, and earned a bachelor's degree in art at bluffton college in ohio, and then a master's from the university of colorado in boulder.at boulder, katie horseman, a visiting lecturer and head of ceramics at edinburgh college of art in scotland, introduced soldner to ceramics. after teaching for eight years in public schools and driven to become a potter, soldner, then 33, headed for los angeles county art institute, became voulkos' first student, earned his master's in fine arts, and began what art historians look upon as a seminal journey toward contemporary ceramic sculpture.under voulkos, soldner helped set up the ceramics department with equipment and invented modifications to the pottery wheel, which began a lifelong interest in innovations — soldner pottery equipment. the artist was one of voulkos' few students who continued to make functional ceramics at the institute, observes garth clark in a century of ceramics in the united states, 1878-1978. though he worked in a traditional form, his exploratory nature was involved in creating his monumental "floor pots, " which stood up to nine feet in height, often with expressionistically painted areas on the forms.in 1956, after graduation, soldner was asked to stand in for the ceramics instructor at scripps college in claremont, california. he stayed and taught at scripps and the claremont graduate school for 37 years — and remained prolific during his teaching years (he has had 178 solo exhibitions, 400 invitational exhibitions, and given more than 400 lectures, seminars, demonstrations, and workshops. he also created and has curated the annual scripps ceramics invitational exhibition. meanwhile, his students included a 'who's who' of contemporary ceramic sculptors, including jun kaneko and rudy autio.soldner has made invaluable contributions to the field of ceramics, including developing american raku and a technique known as "low-temperature salt firing." his involvement with raku, for which he has gained international acclaim, came by chance. as garth clark relates:"invited to demonstrate at a crafts fair in 1960, soldner decided to experiment with the technique. using bernard leach's a potter's book as his guide, he set up a simple kiln and improvised a few lead-based glazes. the results were disappointing: the clay body did not respond well to the quick firing technique, and the glazes were shiny and too brightly colored. his fascination with raku (a japanese technique developed in the sixteenth century) did not diminish, however, and soldner continued to experiment. at first he produced mainly tea bowls, but soon found these restrictive and somewhat academic, as there was no tea ceremony in western culture that would give the forms their traditional significance. he gradually discovered he was more interested in raku as a technique and an aesthetic than as a tradition. this attitude resulted in a much more playful approach to form, scale, function, and material."as his main medium of expression, soldner adopted, transformed, and manipulated traditional raku — which involves throwing and bisque-firing vessels which are then glazed and placed directly in an open raku kiln to be withdrawn a few minutes later and plunged into water — and gained widespread acclaim in the ceramics art world. though through soldner, raku has evolved from its oriental traditions and become a strongly american art form — one that requires the same depth and sensitivity to succeed. soldner states (1973):in the spirit of raku, there is the necessity to embrace the element of surprise. there can be no fear of losing what was once planned and there must be an urge to grow along with the discovery of the unknown. in the spirit of raku: make no demands, expect nothing, follow no absolute plan, be secure in change, learn to accept another solution and, finally, prefer to gamble on your own intuition. raku offers us deep understanding of those qualities in pottery which are of a more spiritual nature, of pots by men willing to create objects that have meaning as well as function.soldner has long infused new issues and ideas into his work. his development of the low-temperature salt firing method for his raku pieces and his pedestal pieces — thrown and altered sculptural clay forms — push the limits of clay, revealing unique textures and forms. soldner's works have been exhibited in throughout all of the major cities of europe and the united states, canada, latvia, japan, taiwan, korea, and australia.soldner is also the author of numerous articles and a book. kilns and their construction, and the founder of the anderson ranch arts center in snowmass village, colorado. the center was founded in 1968, and soldner served as the director in the early 1970s. it is now well known for its excellent summer program, drawing people from all over the world to study with well-known teachers.
condition: good condition, no chips or cracks
dimensions: 4.5 x 4.5 in
soldner, paul (1921-2011) ceramic, delaware in newark, where he served as a professor until his retirement in 2006.throughout his career, spinski experimented with many different materials, forms and techniques, becoming most well-known for his tromp l'oeil clay sculptures, which often incorporated humor and, occassionally, a jestering live performance. in a 1983 article in the new york times, art historian helen a. was his grandparents that taught him his navajo culture which he hopes to pass on in his figurative sculpture.marshall served in the us army where he did some work in illustration. after his service he moved to the shiprock reservation where he worked first as a diesel mechanic and later as an illustrator. at that time he began sculpting and would go on searches for stone with his friend, oreland joe.marshall is one of the most accomplished sculptors working today and he is gaining increasing attention on the native american art scene.over the last two decades, alvin has received much acclaim closeness and harmony that was at the heart of navajo life.despite his successful career as one of today's best native american stone sculptors, alvin remains a quiet, spiritual man who lives in his pointillism to a very personal style of bold color and with masses of paint, akin to that of vincent van gogh and fauve painters paul cezanne and henri matisse.his early work was tonalist in style in the manner of scandinavian romanticism, but after he began taking trips to colorado, where he created many paintings of the rocky mountains, his work became much more expressionist and fauve or brightly colored.he was the son of a lutheran minister and received his art education in europe, graduating in 1890 from the college of skara in sweden and then taking further study at the university of lund. he was the pupil of anders zorn and studied painting at the artists' league of stockholm and then with aman-jean in paris.in 1894, he emigrated to kansas where until 1945 he was professor at bethany college and from then until his death, professor emeritus. not only did he paint in the west including yellowstone national park in 1930, he amassed a personal collection of over 500 western paintings and drawings.at bethany college, he organized the first exhibition of swedish-american art held at that swedish institution. the exhibit included paintings by himself and his colleagues. he was also active in the swedish-american society in chicago.in 1916, he first went to colorado and in the mid 1920s, taught some classes at the broadmore hotel. he also taught at denver college and at utah state college. from 1918, he became a regular visitor to santa fe and taos, new mexico, and in 1922, exhibited with the taos society of artists in new york.during the depression, he was a w.p.a. artist and was the author of a book titled with brush and pencil. "he was also a founding member of the prairie printmakers society. in the 1930s, a handful of intaglio and block print artists from wichita, lawrence and el dorado, kansas met with sandzen in his studio and under his direction created one of america's most successful print societies".
