was edited and published by rev. issac leeser of philadelphia, who was one of the leading orthodox rabbinic authorities in america during that time. \n \n \n  \n \n \n although an ashkenazic prayer book with english translation had already been printed in london in 1770, (see: royal auction house, auction 3, lot 40), leeser still felt that a new and improved edition was necessary, as he writes in his introduction: \u201cit requires but little critical knowledge to discern the great defectiveness of all the editions hitherto issued in england, at least those which have fallen under my notice\u2026 one of the great defects in the english editions being the apparent want of proper arrangement, and the entire absence of many portions, which ought to have a place in every prayer book which is in daily and constant use\u201d. \n \n \n  \n \n \n rev. issac leeser (1806-1868), a pioneering leader and advocate for orthodox jewry in the 19th century, who was known as a fierce opponent to the reform movement. to that end, he published numerous works and periodicals where he would write against the reform movement. \n \n \n  \n \n \n contains prayers for the entire year. with two title pages, english opposite the hebrew. \n \n \n  \n \n \n a fine copy in overall very good condition. light foxing seen on several leaves, typical for imprints of this era. bound in original (?) torah\u201d in hebrew. at the top of the page is a quote from a verse in proverbs (mishlei) \u2013 \u201cateres tiferes timagnecha\u201d \u2013 the crown of glory are those who shield you. this is perhaps a cryptic reference to the marranos, who risked their lives to practice judaism in private. \n \n \n  \n \n \n an exceptionally rare edition. to the best of our knowledge, it has never been suggests, (\u201ckol bo\u201d - \u201call is within\u201d) it deals with all relevant halachos and minhagim of the jewish life cycle. \n \n \n  \n \n \n although kol bo is frequently recited by the acharonim, it remains a mystery as to who exactly authored the work. the beis yosef writes (avkas rochel, siman 13) that the words of the kol bo are identical to sefer orchos chaim, which was written by r. aharon hakohen of luniel, who was one of the rishonim. based on this, some suggest that it was the beis yosef\u2019s opinion that it was written by r. aharon of luniel. this opinion is also held by the chida (see: shem hagedolim, sefarim, maareches kaf), however the shalsheles hakabalah is of the opinion that it was authored by the rivash. \n \n \n  \n \n \n parts 64-70 deal specifically with the laws of rosh hashanah and yom kippur, and includes instructions of teshuvah which was authored by the rokeach. parts 71-72 and onwards deal with relevant halachos of sukkah and arbah minim. \n \n \n  \n \n \n in the halachos of pesach is a comprehensive commentary on the haggadah (part 51). \n \n \n  \n \n \n this edition was printed at the press of giorgio di cavalli in venice, one of the first printers to begin printing hebrew books after the burning of hebrew books in venice in 1553. it features his unique printer\u2019s emblem depicting an elephant with a castle on its back. beneath the elephant is cavalli\u2019s motto \u2013 in latin: \u201ctarde sed tuto\u201d \u2013 \u201cslowly but surely\u201d. \n \n \n  \n \n \n unfortunately, cavalli\u2019s success with hebrew books did not last long, as hundreds of copies of his hebrew imprints were burned in venice in 1568, ultimately resulting in the closure of his business. as a result, hebrew books printed by cavalli are very with virtually all torah leaders of his day, and authored thousands of responsa. in his early years he was a follower of the divrei chaim of sanz, and later he became a staunch follower of r. dovid of tolna. in 1902, he was appointed rav of kielce, poland. it was during this time that he used this tehillim, as indicated on his stamp. \n \n \n  \n \n \n also seen is the personal stamp of rabbi menachem (emanuel) schwartz of scranton, pa. rabbi menachem schwartz (1870-1939), a saintly chasidic jew who was a disciple of the kedushas yom tov of sighet as well as the minchas elazar of munkatch. in his later years he emigrated to america and moved to scranton, where he owned a wine business. it is said that r. menachem was the only person living in america from whom the minchas elazar accepted money; a testament to the righteousness and stature of r. menachem schwartz.  \n \n \n  \n \n \n this copy is complete with all pages of ma\u2019amados, bound in a sumptuous custom leather was printed again for the third time. \n \n \n  \n \n \n our copy is a variant copy, made up of the second edition of sefer bereishis (venice, 1600), which was reprinted with large, clear letters and with indices. the remainder of the work (shemos\u2013devarim) is made up of the first edition, which was printed one year later in 1601. both works are bound together in one volume. \n \n \n  \n \n \n interestingly, the national library of israel holds 2 identical variant copies as the present copy, which were acquired from the valmadonna trust library. as such, it is possible that the 1601 edition was originally offered for sale in this way, with the venice 1600 edition of bereishis together with the remainder of the work, as a replacement for the 1601 edition of bereishis. the reason for this might be because this venice edition boasts large clear letters, as well as a comprehensive index, thus making it a favorite over the 1601 edition. \n \n \n  \n \n \n upon further research we find perhaps a solid proof for this theory. the indexes featured at the end of the venice 1601 edition begin from sefer shemos \u2013 not sefer bereishis \u2013 unlike one would expect. if we assume that it was originally offered together with the 1600 edition of bereishis, as mentioned above, then it is clear why there are no indexes for bereishis, as they were already printed one year earlier in their own volume. \n \n \n  \n \n \n r. moshe alshich (1508-1593), known as the alshich hakadosh, was a prominent rabbi, preacher, and biblical commentator in the latter part of the sixteenth century. towards the end of his life, he moved to safed where he became a student of r. yosef karo. his students included r. chaim vital and r. yom tov tzahalon. he died in safed in 1593 where he is buried. \n \n \n  \n \n \n only a few rabbis were granted the title \"hakadosh\" throughout jewish history. alongside the alshich were the shelah hakadosh, the ari hakadosh and the ohr hachaim hakadosh, all of them distinctive personalities in their times. virtually all his works are well-known, cherished and studied until today. \n \n \n  \n \n \n in good condition, with occasional light stains. \n \n \n \u201ceinei yitzchok\u201d, which was published in vilna in 1879. he is perhaps most famous for his work \u201cklil tiferes\u201d, in which he refutes the controversial passage found in tiferes yisroel regarding the personality of moshe rabbeinu. the work was well received and earned praise from the aderes and r. yehoshua leib diskin. \n \n \n  \n \n \n presented in this lot are unique manuscripts and letters from the vilkomir maggid which have never been published, as well as those of his son r. zev wolf, who succeeded him as maggid of vilkomir as mentioned above. \n \n \n  \n \n \n  sefer olas aharon, a composition of derush on chumash and nevi\u2019im which has never been published. entirely in manuscript form, written by a scribe in preparation for print. with marginal glosses, additions and corrections which are seen on many pages throughout in the handwriting of the author himself. this volume is entirely complete and begins on page 93 at parshas shemos, and continues to parts of nevi\u2019im.   \n \n \n  \n \n \n 93-232, 5, 86 pp. 21.5cm. bound in original binding, rubbed and worn; spine detached. \n \n \n  \n \n \n  sefer lev aharon,  a fully handwritten composition containing derashos on the yamim tovim, which has not yet been published. written in the hand of a scribe in preparation for print, however it is replete with additions, corrections and annotations in the handwriting of the author. the indices as well were seemingly written by the author himself.  \n \n \n  \n \n \n at the end of the manuscript, we find a letter written by the noda b\u2019yehuda from 1782, which was copied and transcribed by the author. this letter became particularly famous as it deals with the maskil hertz weisel who the noda b\u2019yehuda vehemently opposed. interestingly, this letter was reprinted by r. akiva yosef schlesinger in his work \u201clev haivri\u201d, who writes the following: \u201ci copied this letter from the vilkomir maggid, author of \u201ceinei yitzchok\u201d. the actual letter is held by a grandson of the noda b\u2019yehuda, r. wolf landa, who currently lives in kovno\u201d. \n \n \n  \n \n \n contains an written by r. chaim volozhiner himself during his lifetime, and was brought to print after his death by his son and successor r. itzele of volozhin. in his introduction, he explains that the reason why he called this work \u201cnefesh hachaim\u201d, is because that was the way his father r. chaim volozhiner used to sign his name in his letters and responsa. \n \n \n  \n \n \n it was written primarily to refute various beliefs amongst chassidim, particularly that of the ba\u2019al hatanya. it is divided into four parts, and discusses how one should live his life as a torah jew. till this very day, it is perhaps the most fundamental work studied in the yeshiva world. the brisker rav would say that nefesh hachaim \u201cis the shulchan aruch in hashkafa\u201d. every aspect of man\u2019s life \u2013 beginning with the creation of the world until death \u2013 is discussed here with utmost clarity.  \n \n \n  \n \n \n this edition bears a unique phrase at the beginning of chapter 4 (sha\u2019ar dalet), which was omitted in all subsequent editions: \u201cunfortunately in our days it has all been flipped around; what is considered lowly is now on high and what is truly lofty is now lowly\u201d (see hebrew description for an exact quote of the text). the beginning of the phrase \u201cwhat was considered lowly is now on high\u201d, is referring to the phenomenon of focusing on chassidus and dveikus instead of the torah itself. it is told that r. itzele felt that this remark was too harsh of a criticism to be printed, and ordered that in all copies this would be covered with paper. interestingly, the glue stain of that paper is clearly visible in this copy, on these exact words. as mentioned, these words were omitted entirely from all later editions. \n \n \n  \n \n \n  first edition of nefesh hachaim - the segulah  \n \n \n  \n \n \n a great deal of segulos have been attributed to this holy work, and without doubt brings a great source of blessing and protection into one\u2019s home. see, for example \u201cthe soul of emunah\u201d, r. reuven schmeltzer (israel bookshop publications, 2020, pp. 211-212, footnote 9), a famous miraculous story regarding a dibbuk which took place in 1909: \u201cr. zvi hircsh levenberg related that when r. elchanan wasserman was in america in 1938, he told him the entire account of the dibbuk\u2026 rav levenberg remembered him lubavtich instructed that it be said at the kever of his father, the alter rebbe. following the passing of the rebbe rayatz in 1950, the lubavitcher rebbe r. menachem mendel schneerson instructed that this custom be followed at his father-in-laws kever as well, which is practiced amongst chabad chassidim till this day. \n \n \n  \n \n \n this zhitomir edition is uncommon, and is rarely seen at sefer] and attest to this\u201d.  \n \n \n  \n \n \n first edition. printed in 1701 from manuscript form. \n \n \n  \n \n \n  who authored reziel hamalach?  \n \n \n  \n \n \n in the publisher\u2019s introduction, he relates that when preparing the manuscript for print, he borrowed another two manuscripts to verify the authenticity of his manuscript. his manuscript however, was written by \u201celiezer ben r. yehudah\u201d, who attested that these concepts were related to him by r. yehuda hachassid.  \n \n \n  \n \n \n although no mention is made by the publisher, it is clear that \u201celiezer ben r. yehudah\u201d is none other than the rokeach \u2014 r. eliezer of worms.  \n \n \n  \n \n \n indeed, there are many similarities between the concepts discussed in sefer harokeach and those in reziel hamalach. see, for example pp. 9-10 of reziel hamalach five main \u201cshorashim\u201d necessary to attain in order to properly understand these kabbalistic secrets. these very same principles are also found in the introduction to sefer rokeach, at times even using identical wording and style. please refer to the hebrew description for an exact quote of his words found in both works. \n \n \n  \n \n \n it is therefore clear without doubt that reziel hamalach \u2014 as a sefer \u2014 was authored by the rokeach, one of the \u201cchassidei ashkenaz\u201d. why the רזיאל המלאך - בתור ספר - נכתב על ידי רבינו הרוקח, אחד מחסידי אשכנז. מדוע המו״ל של מהדורה הזו ואף הביבליוגרפים לא הצליחו להבין זאת, נותרה בגדר תעלומה. למיטב ידיעתינו הרי אנו היחידים שעמדנו על כך, ת״ל. \n \n \n  \n \n \n יש לציין את אשר כתוב \n בספר רב פעלים לרבי אברהם בן הגר״א, המביא את דעתו של אביו, הגאון מווילנא,  (ראה ערך מעשה בראשית), כי ספר רזיאל נכתב על ידי הרוקח, וכהוכחה לכך מכיון שיש ברייתות ומדרשים שמופיעים רק בספר רזיאל ובספרי הרוקח ואינם נמצאים בשום מקום אחר. אך לאור האמור למעלה, יש לנו להוכיח בפשוט שחיברו הרוקח, מכיון שיש אותם יסודות עקריים הן ברזיאל והן ברוקח \u2014 ולפעמים מובא באותו סגנון שווה \u2014 הרי ברור ללא ספק שחיברו הרוקח. וזה תואם גם לדברי הגר״א, ולדברי המדפיס שהיה שמו של הרוקח \u2014 אליעזר בן יהודה \u2014 רשום ע״ג הכת״י.  \n \n \n  \n \n \n במצב כללי טוב.
